The Machinery Behind a Pool Removal (And Why It Matters)

The pool removal machinery used on your job directly determines how long the work takes, how much rubble moves per day, and ultimately what the job costs. In the Southern Highlands, access constraints on established Highlands properties often force a smaller machine choice, which stretches the job timeline and affects the quote. This article explains the main plant types so you can have an informed conversation with your contractor and understand why two seemingly identical jobs attract different prices.

Excavator sizing: 5t vs 8t vs 13t

Excavators are classified by operating weight, and the size chosen for your job depends primarily on access. Here is how the three common size classes compare:

A 13-tonne excavator moves roughly four times the material per bucket pass compared to a 5-tonne mini. On a standard concrete pool removal, a large excavator completes the breaking and load-out in two days; a 5-tonne mini may take four to five days for the same pool. The machine hire rate is higher for the large excavator, but the total job cost is often lower because fewer days means less operator time.

In practice, many Highlands properties with established gardens, narrow side access or stone walls cannot fit an 8 or 13-tonne machine. The contractor who quotes without visiting has no way of knowing which size they will bring.

Hydraulic breakers vs bucket rippers

Once the excavator is on site, the attachment it uses to demolish the concrete shell makes a significant difference to productivity.

A hydraulic breaker (sometimes called a rock hammer or jack hammer attachment) delivers repeated high-energy blows to concrete, breaking it into manageable chunks. It is the standard tool for concrete pool demolition and for any site where sandstone or hard rock is encountered. The breaker attachment is swapped onto the excavator in place of the standard bucket.

A bucket ripper is a fixed tine attachment that tears and rips softer material. It is occasionally used to fracture fibreglass shells or to open up cracks in older, thinner concrete before the breaker follows up.

Tipper trucks and float mobilisation

Every piece of concrete, rubble and spoil that leaves your property does so by tipper truck. Tippers used in pool removal typically hold six to ten tonnes of material per load. A concrete pool removal generates 15 to 25 tonnes of rubble and subsoil, meaning three to five tipper loads minimum.

The tipper hauls material to either a licensed concrete recycling facility or a construction and demolition waste tip. Float mobilisation is the truck and trailer system used to transport the excavator to and from your property. In the Southern Highlands, this is a genuine cost item because excavators are rarely based locally and must be floated from Wollongong, Camden or the Southern Tablelands. Float hire typically adds $350 to $550 to the job mobilisation cost.

Why access dictates machine choice

Key access constraints on Highlands properties:

Gate and fence width. A standard 5-tonne mini excavator has a body width of approximately 1,500mm in travel mode. A 13-tonne machine runs to 2,600mm or more. A single standard gate at 900mm clear width limits you to a walk-behind loader or very compact mini. Removing a section of fence or gate is often the most cost-effective solution if access is the only constraint.

Ground bearing capacity. Domestic driveways are typically designed for passenger vehicles under 3 tonnes, not for excavators or loaded tippers. A 13-tonne excavator on a thin concrete driveway without protective matting can crack the surface. On unsealed Highlands rural driveways, wet weather can make the surface impassable for heavy plant. This is a common hidden cost item on properties with gravel or earth access tracks.

Internal turning space. Tippers need room to manoeuvre near the pool area for efficient loading. A property where the tipper can reverse close to the excavation saves significant hand-balling time. On tight suburban blocks, the lack of turning space can add an hour or more per tipper load.

Rock breakers for hard-dig sites

When rock is encountered during excavation, whether a sandstone shelf under the pool floor or a basalt intrusion, a dedicated rock breaker attachment replaces the standard bucket for the duration of the hard-dig section. Rock breaking is slower and harder on the machine than standard soil excavation, and most contractors charge a day-rate premium for rock-breaking conditions.

Compaction plates and rollers for backfill

Once the pool is demolished and spoil removed, the excavation void is filled with clean granular material placed in controlled layers. Each layer is compacted using a plate compactor (a vibrating flat plate attached to the excavator or operated by hand) or a vibrating roller for larger fill areas.

Proper compaction prevents the ground surface from settling unevenly after the job, which is particularly important on the Highlands clay soils where frost-thaw cycles can move poorly compacted fill. The backfill specification and compaction method should be stated in your written quote; vague language like “fill and compact as required” is not sufficient.

For a full pool removal, the contractor should be able to tell you the fill material specification (typically clean crushed rock or road base), the compaction layer depth (usually 200-300mm lifts), and the target compaction standard.

Machinery on soft rural driveways

Why does the size of excavator matter to me as the homeowner?

Machine size determines how quickly the job is completed. A larger machine costs more per hour but moves more material per hour, usually resulting in a lower total cost. A smaller machine fits tighter access but takes longer, so while the day rate is lower, the total hire duration is longer. The net effect on total cost depends on your specific site.

Can I tell the contractor which machine to use?

You can express preferences, but the contractor is responsible for plant selection based on the site conditions and their assessment of access. If you are concerned about driveway damage, discuss protection measures rather than trying to specify the machine.

What is the difference between a mini excavator and a standard excavator for pool removal?

A mini excavator (under 5 tonnes) is much slower at concrete breaking and material handling but can fit through very tight access. A standard or large excavator (8-13 tonnes) breaks concrete faster and loads tippers more efficiently. The choice depends on what the site access allows.

Does the contractor supply all the machines, or do they hire separately?
