Fibreglass pools were heavily marketed through the 1980s and 1990s as the low-maintenance, long-lasting alternative to concrete. Fibreglass pool removal in the Highlands is a distinct process from concrete pool removal. The shell behaves differently, the challenges are different, and the options for disposal are limited in ways that affect cost. What Makes Fibreglass Different to Concrete

Concrete pools are demolished, the shell is broken up by a hydraulic hammer into rubble, the rubble is sorted (some used as fill, some removed), and the excavation is backfilled. The process is inherently destructive and the material is easily handled.

Fibreglass pools are extracted, the shell is a single moulded unit that, while it can be cracked and cut, doesn’t break into small pieces the way concrete does. The removal process is more like a surgical extraction than a demolition. This creates several distinct considerations:

The shell must be cracked from below. The excavator typically exposes the sides of the pool, then uses the bucket or a specialist attachment to crack the base of the shell. Once cracked, sections can be prised away and cut with angle grinders or reciprocating saws.

The pieces are large and awkward. Even when cut into sections, fibreglass pool sections are large, curved, difficult to handle and take up significant space in a truck. Transport and disposal costs per tonne are higher than for concrete rubble.

Fibreglass cannot be crushed for use as fill. Unlike concrete rubble, fibreglass waste is classified as a non-recyclable construction and demolition waste and must go to licensed landfill. There’s no opportunity to reduce disposal costs by reusing crushed shell on-site.

The excavation must still be backfilled. After the shell is removed, you have a significant hole in the ground, often 1.5-2m deep, that must be filled and compacted properly. The backfill cost is the same whether the pool was fibreglass or concrete.

Cold Climate Effects on Fibreglass Pools

The Southern Highlands’ cold, wet winters accelerate the two most common fibreglass pool failure modes:

Osmotic blistering. Water molecules penetrate the gelcoat and react with laminate layers beneath, forming dome-shaped blisters across the pool surface. The constant ground moisture in the Highlands, combined with winter cold and freeze-thaw cycling, accelerates osmosis significantly compared to a warmer coastal environment. Many Highlands fibreglass pools that are 15-20 years old show heavy blistering across the floor and lower walls.

Gelcoat crazing. Cold temperatures make the gelcoat brittle. Rapid temperature changes, a cold frosty morning followed by direct winter sun, create thermal stress that produces a fine network of cracks across the gelcoat surface. Once cracked, the gelcoat admits water more freely, accelerating osmotic damage.

A fibreglass pool with moderate to heavy blistering is typically beyond economic repair. Re-coating is possible but expensive ($8,000-$15,000 for a full gelcoat restoration), and if the underlying laminate has been compromised, the new coat won’t bond properly. The Fibreglass Lifting Problem

One failure mode specific to fibreglass pools is shell lifting. If a fibreglass pool is drained in a location with a high water table or saturated soil conditions, the buoyancy force of the saturated soil can physically lift the shell out of the excavation. This is more common than most people expect.

In the Southern Highlands, several factors increase the risk:

  • Clay and basalt soils that retain moisture rather than draining
  • Seasonal groundwater fluctuations that can be dramatic in winter

Lifting doesn’t necessarily make removal harder (a cracked, lifted shell is actually easier to extract), but it does confirm the pool is beyond restoration.

The Removal Process: Step by Step

  1. Site preparation. The pool area is cleared, equipment is positioned, and the pool is drained if not already empty.
  2. Fencing and surrounding structure removal. Pool fencing, coping and surrounding concrete are removed first to give the excavator access.
  3. Shell exposure. The excavator digs around the shell perimeter to expose the full depth.
  4. Shell cracking and extraction. The base is cracked, sections are prised loose and cut into manageable pieces. This is the most time-intensive part of a fibreglass removal.
  5. Plumbing disconnection. Water supply, return lines, backwash and any hydrostatic valve connections are cut and capped.
  6. Load and dispose. Shell sections are loaded onto a truck for transport to a licensed landfill facility.
  7. Backfill and compact. The excavation is filled in layers with appropriate material, each layer compacted before the next is added. A site inspector checks compaction.
  8. Final inspection. The certifier inspects the completed backfill and issues the compliance documentation.

Fibreglass is a composite material, glass fibre reinforcement bound in a resin matrix. It’s not recyclable in any mainstream sense. The waste is classified as general construction and demolition waste and goes to a licensed landfill facility.

Can a fibreglass pool be extracted whole rather than cut up?

In theory, yes, if the pool can be craned out and the site has crane access. In practice, this is rarely feasible for residential properties in the Highlands. The pool’s dimensions (often 3-4m wide and 8-10m long) plus the restricted access typical of residential blocks make crane extraction impractical. Cutting and extracting in sections is the standard approach.

Is fibreglass removal more or less expensive than concrete removal?

It depends on pool size, but for comparable pools, fibreglass removal is often slightly cheaper than concrete removal because:

  • No hydraulic rock hammer needed to break the shell
  • Less total material volume to cart (fibreglass is lighter than concrete rubble)

What if my fibreglass pool is buried very deep?

Some fibreglass pools, particularly from the 1980s era, were installed in deep excavations, 2m or more. Deep removal requires more extensive excavation around the shell, more backfill material and potentially shoring of the excavation edges in unstable soils. Does the colour or condition of the fibreglass affect removal cost?

No, the removal process is the same regardless of the shell’s cosmetic condition. A heavily blistered, cracked or discoloured shell takes the same effort to remove as a well-maintained one.
